Ocean Response to Wind Variations, Warm Water Volume, and Simple Models of ENSO in the Low-Frequency Approximation

چکیده
Physical processes that control ENSO are relatively fast. For instance, it takes only several months for a Kelvin wave to cross the Pacific basin (Tk ’ 2 months), while Rossby waves travel the same distance in about half a year. Compared to such short time scales, the typical periodicity of El Niño is much longer (T ’ 2–7 yr). Thus, ENSO is fundamentally a low-frequency phenomenon in the context of these faster processes. Here, the author takes advantage of this fact and uses the smallness of the ratio «k 5 Tk/T to expand solutions of the ocean shallow-water equations into power series (the actual parameter of expansion also includes the oceanic damping rate). Using such an expansion, referred to here as the low-frequency approximation, the author relates thermocline depth anomalies to temperature variations in the eastern equatorial Pacific via an explicit integral operator. This allows a simplified formulation of ENSO dynamics based on an integro-differential equation. Within this formulation, the author shows how the interplay between wind stress curl and oceanic damping rates affects 1) the amplitude and periodicity of El Niño and 2) the phase lag between variations in the equatorial warm water volume and SST in the eastern Pacific. A simple analytical expression is derived for the phase lag. Further, applying the low-frequency approximation to the observed variations in SST, the author computes thermocline depth anomalies in the western and eastern equatorial Pacific to show a good agreement with the observed variations in warm water volume. Ultimately, this approach provides a rigorous framework for deriving other simple models of ENSO (the delayed and recharge oscillators), highlights the limitations of such models, and can be easily used for decadal climate variability in the Pacific.

Ocean response to arbitrary wind perturbations in the low-frequency approximation: implications for ENSO and decadal climate variability
We study the response of the ocean thermocline in the Pacific to arbitrary periodic wind stress perturbations in the low-frequency limit. This approximation assumes that the characteristic period of the wind forcing is much longer than the propagation timescales of the first-order baroclinic waves involved in ocean adjustment. Starting from the reduced-gravity 11⁄2-layer model and building on t...
متن کاملObservations of Warm Water Volume Changes in the Equatorial Paciic and Their Relationship to El Ni~ No and La Ni~ Na
This paper describes observed changes in surface winds, sea surface temperature (SST) and the volume of water warmer than 20 C (WWV) in the equatorial Paciic Ocean for the period 1980{99. The purpose is to test recent hypotheses about the relationship between variations in WWV and the El Ni~ no/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle. Our results connrm inferences based on theory, models, and previou...
متن کاملEstimating the Diapycnal Transport Contribution to Warm Water Volume Variations in the Tropical Pacific Ocean
Variations in the warm water volume (WWV) of the equatorial Pacific Ocean are considered a key element of the dynamics of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. WWV, a proxy for the upperocean heat content, is usually defined as the volume of water with temperatures greater than 208C. It has been suggested that the observed variations in WWV are controlled by interplay among meridi...

An analysis of observational data in the Barents Sea along a meridian at 3330 E between 7030 and 7230 N has reported a negative correlation between El Niño/La Niña Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and water temperature in the top 200 m: the temperature drops about 0.5 C during warm ENSO events while during cold ENSO events the top 200 m layer of the Barents Sea is warmer. Results from 1 and 1...
متن کاملImpact of the 1997/98 ENSO on upper ocean characteristics in Marguerite Bay, western Antarctic Peninsula
[1] A year-round sequence of hydrographic casts is used to trace the evolution of the upper ocean waters in Marguerite Bay, western Antarctic Peninsula (wAP), between 1998 and 2002. Winter 1998 was anomalous, showing an unusually deep mixed layer that became progressively more saline until spring, reaching salinities as high as 34.0. The remnant of this mixed layer (the Winter Water, WW) was th...
